English: The Charles and Harriet Cannon House, 216 Metcalfe Street, Buffalo, New York, August 2020. Built in 1893, this two-story wood-framed residence exemplifies the Quenn Anne school of architecture with its asymmetrical façade, shed-roofed front porch (originally supported by wooden Doric pilasters, replaced now with ornamental ironwork), and prominent gables (adorned with cornice returns, unusually for the style). However, it's most notable architecturally for its Eastlake-style woodwork, which unfortunately adorns the interior spaces for the most part and is thus not seen in this photograph; an exception is the ornamental bracket visible at left underneath the side gable. The neighborhood's economy and identity were long inexorably linked with the adjacent stockyards, which at the time were the second-largest in the country after Chicago's; fittingly, the house's longtime owner Charles Cannon (1857-1936) was a butcher by trade who by the time of the house's construction had elevated himself to the status of one of the city's most prominent cattle brokers and a seat on the Livestock Commission. Interestingly, Charles appears to have moved out of the house c. 1911, but his wife, Harriet née Eberhardt (1860-1946), continued living there with her sister-in-law, her husband and their family until her death. |
