Text

Luther S. White Dies. Developed Powder Flashlight Photography. Ill Two Years. Stamford, Connecticut; August 25, 1936. Luther S. White, 78, leading New York theatrical photographer 30 years ago and developer of powder flashlight photography, died here yesterday in his home, 128 Hubbard avenue. Mr. White began experimenting in the early '90s and at that time it was necessary to have three men take a picture inside a theater. Smoke and ashes filled the studio after each flash and the audience had to sneeze. He bought the Byron and Co. flashlight studio in Manhattan with borrowed money. It was here he conceived the idea of using an explosive powder to make an instantaneous flash. When the war came the War Department requisitioned all his negatives to be used in gas masks. Mr. White retired. He had his studio at 620 Fifth avenue, which his son took over. His health broke two years ago. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Martha Dexter White and a son, Dexter White.

Public domain
This work is in the public domain because it was published in the United States between 1929 and 1963, and although there may or may not have been a copyright notice, the copyright was not renewed. For further explanation, see Commons:Hirtle chart and the copyright renewal logs. Note that it may still be copyrighted in jurisdictions that do not apply the rule of the shorter term for US works (depending on the date of the author's death), such as Canada (70 years p.m.a.), Mainland China (50 years p.m.a., not Hong Kong or Macao), Germany (70 years p.m.a.), Mexico (100 years p.m.a.), Switzerland (70 years p.m.a.), and other countries with individual treaties.

Works copyrighted before 1964 had to have the copyright renewed sometime in the 28th year. If the copyright was not renewed, the work is in the public domain. No renewal notice was found for this periodical for issues published in this year. For instance, the first New York Times issue renewed was from April 1, 1928. Some publications may have renewed an individual article from an earlier time, for instance the New York Times renewed at least one article published on January 9, 1927. If you find any contrary evidence, or the renewal database has been updated, please notify me.
