Review of initial updates on Wikimedia movement strategy process

Note: Apologies for cross-posting and sending in English. Message is available for translation on Meta-Wiki.

The Wikimedia movement is beginning a movement-wide strategy discussion, a process which will run throughout 2017. For 15 years, Wikimedians have worked together to build the largest free knowledge resource in human history. During this time, we've grown from a small group of editors to a diverse network of editors, developers, affiliates, readers, donors, and partners. Today, we are more than a group of websites. We are a movement rooted in values and a powerful vision: all knowledge for all people. As a movement, we have an opportunity to decide where we go from here.

This movement strategy discussion will focus on the future of our movement: where we want to go together, and what we want to achieve. We hope to design an inclusive process that makes space for everyone: editors, community leaders, affiliates, developers, readers, donors, technology platforms, institutional partners, and people we have yet to reach. There will be multiple ways to participate including on-wiki, in private spaces, and in-person meetings. You are warmly invited to join and make your voice heard.

The immediate goal is to have a strategic direction by Wikimania 2017 to help frame a discussion on how we work together toward that strategic direction.

Regular updates are being sent to the Wikimedia-l mailing list, and posted on Meta-Wiki. Beginning with this message, monthly reviews of these updates will be sent to this page as well. Sign up to receive future announcements and monthly highlights of strategy updates on your user talk page.

Here is a review of the updates that have been sent so far:

More information about the movement strategy is available on the Meta-Wiki 2017 Wikimedia movement strategy portal.

Overview #2 of updates on Wikimedia movement strategy process

Note: Apologies for cross-posting and sending in English. This message is available for translation on Meta-Wiki.

As we mentioned last month, the Wikimedia movement is beginning a movement-wide strategy discussion, a process which will run throughout 2017. This movement strategy discussion will focus on the future of our movement: where we want to go together, and what we want to achieve.

Regular updates are being sent to the Wikimedia-l mailing list, and posted on Meta-Wiki. Each month, we are sending overviews of these updates to this page as well. Sign up to receive future announcements and monthly highlights of strategy updates on your user talk page.

Here is a overview of the updates that have been sent since our message last month:

We invite you to join the movement strategy conversation (now through April 15)

18 mrt 2017 06:09 (CET)

Please accept our apologies for cross-posting this message. This message is available for translation on Meta-Wiki.

On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Elections Committee, I am pleased to announce that self-nominations are being accepted for the 2017 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Elections.

The Board of Trustees (Board) is the decision-making body that is ultimately responsible for the long-term sustainability of the Wikimedia Foundation, so we value wide input into its selection. More information about this role can be found on Meta-Wiki. Please read the letter from the Board of Trustees calling for candidates.

The candidacy submission phase will last from April 7 (00:00 UTC) to April 20 (23:59 UTC).

We will also be accepting questions to ask the candidates from April 7 to April 20. You can submit your questions on Meta-Wiki.

Once the questions submission period has ended on April 20, the Elections Committee will then collate the questions for the candidates to respond to beginning on April 21.

The goal of this process is to fill the three community-selected seats on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. The election results will be used by the Board itself to select its new members.

The full schedule for the Board elections is as follows. All dates are inclusive, that is, from the beginning of the first day (UTC) to the end of the last.

  • April 7 (00:00 UTC) – April 20 (23:59 UTC) – Board nominations
  • April 7 – April 20 – Board candidates questions submission period
  • April 21 – April 30 – Board candidates answer questions
  • May 1 – May 14 – Board voting period
  • May 15–19 – Board vote checking
  • May 20 – Board result announcement goal

In addition to the Board elections, we will also soon be holding elections for the following roles:

  • Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC)
    • There are five positions being filled. More information about this election will be available on Meta-Wiki.
  • Funds Dissemination Committee Ombudsperson (Ombuds)
    • One position is being filled. More information about this election will be available on Meta-Wiki.

Please note that this year the Board of Trustees elections will be held before the FDC and Ombuds elections. Candidates who are not elected to the Board are explicitly permitted and encouraged to submit themselves as candidates to the FDC or Ombuds positions after the results of the Board elections are announced.

More information on this year's elections can be found on Meta-Wiki. Any questions related to the election can be posted on the election talk page on Meta-Wiki, or sent to the election committee's mailing list, board-elections(at)wikimedia.org.

On behalf of the Election Committee,
Katie Chan, Chair, Wikimedia Foundation Elections Committee
Joe Sutherland, Community Advocate, Wikimedia Foundation

Wikivoyage at the Wikimania 2017

Dear Wikivoyage community members. The Wikimania 2017 conference will take place in August 2017. I am going to take part and I hope to meet some other community members. To prepare for the conference properly I would like to know more about all your wishes, problems and ideas related to Wikivoyage. I have created a small site on the meta-wiki where you can drop all your thoughts, wishes and concerns. Feel free to create sub sites if needed. It would be great to have a meeting at the conference venue or anywhere in town. -- DerFussi (talk) -- MediaWiki message delivery (overleg) 23 apr 2017 22:04 (CEST)[reageer]

New notification when a page is connected to Wikidata

Hello all,

(Sorry for writing in English. It’d be great if someone could translate it if necessary.)

The Wikidata development team is about to deploy a new feature on all Wikivoyages. It is a new type of notification (via Echo, the notification system you see at the top right of your wiki when you are logged in), that will inform the creator of a page, when this page is connected to a Wikidata item.

You may know that Wikidata provides a centralized system for all the interwikilinks. When a new page is created, it should be connected to the corresponding Wikidata item, by modifying this Wikidata item. With this new notification, editors creating pages will be informed when another editor connects this page to Wikidata.

This feature will be deployed on May 9th on all the Wikivoyages. This feature will be disable by default for existing editors, and enabled by default for new editors. This is the first step of the deployments, the Wikipedias and other Wikimedia projects will follow in the next months.

If you have any question, suggestion, please let me know by pinging me. You can also follow and leave a comment on the Phabricator ticket.

Thanks go to Matěj Suchánek who suggested and developed this feature! Cheers, Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk)

Editing News #1—2017

12 mei 2017 20:06 (CEST)

The banner code has changed and now shows the "Verbergen / Weergeven" feature

As an example, look at the top of this article (press on the "Verbergen" caption inside the banner...)

the changed was made for all the Wikivoyage editions that use the old banner code (The Dutch Wikivoyage and the Hebrew Wikivoyage are among them).

Does anyone know how to revert this change so that the banners would look like they did until yesterday?

ויקיג'אנקי (overleg) 15 jun 2017 01:05 (CEST)[reageer]

It does not work very well. Some examples: it is OK with Granada (stad) and Hongarije, it is not OK with Praag and Tsjechië. This is also the case on the Hebrew Wikivoyage. --FredTC (overleg) 15 jun 2017 09:01 (CEST)[reageer]
Who decided to make this change? (no one asked the our opinion on this matter) and how do we revert this change so that the banners would look like they did until 2 days ago? ויקיג'אנקי (overleg) 15 jun 2017 18:30 (CEST)[reageer]

--FredTC (overleg) 25 jul 2017 14:02 (CEST)[reageer]

Improved search in deleted pages archive

Help met het vertalen in uw taal

During Wikimedia Hackathon 2016, the Discovery team worked on one of the items on the 2015 community wishlist, namely enabling searching the archive of deleted pages. This feature is now ready for production deployment, and will be enabled on all wikis, except Wikidata.

Right now, the feature is behind a feature flag - to use it on your wiki, please go to the Special:Undelete page, and add &fuzzy=1 to the URL, like this: https://test.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AUndelete&fuzzy=1. Then search for the pages you're interested in. There should be more results than before, due to using ElasticSearch indexing (via the CirrusSearch extension).

We plan to enable this improved search by default on all wikis soon (around August 1, 2017). If you have any objections to this - please raise them with the Discovery team via email or on this announcement's discussion page. Like most Mediawiki configuration parameters, the functionality can be configured per wiki. Once the improved search becomes the default, you can still access the old mode using &fuzzy=0 in the URL, like this: https://test.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AUndelete&fuzzy=0

Please note that since Special:Undelete is an admin-only feature, this search capability is also only accessible to wiki admins.

Bedankt! CKoerner (WMF) (talk) 25 jul 2017 20:40 (CEST)[reageer]

Wikimania

Hi there. I've just arrived back home from Montreal. Had some nice talks and meetings. One big fan (his whole family) of Wikivoyage visited me at the community village. People like the listing and map features as well. Congratulations to all of you guys. I have three short points to be discussed here in your community. Got two messages on the poster:

  • Please add more links to Wikipedia
  • Please add information about accessibility to your listings as well as information for all disabled people (e. g. blind and deaf travellers)

I talked with Ziko about travelling information for kids on wikivoyage. It's missing on almost every article (at least on WV/de as far as i know).

Besides I have talked with a guy from Wikitongues. Maybe it is a useful feature to add their videos to phrasebooks or country articles. This is an exmple for Texas German -- DerFussi (overleg) 21 aug 2017 09:38 (CEST)[reageer]

Reisverslag

--FredTC (overleg) 11 sep 2017 16:48 (CEST)[reageer]

PDFs, OCG & Electron

Hey, terribly sorry about writing in English, but since Wikivoyages care about PDFs, an update: You can't use OCG to create PDFs after 1 October. This is because of technical problems, and we're not happy about it. You can use Electron instead, which is how most PDFs are created. Electron will get some missing features prior to 1 October. You can create books but the create books functionality will not have all planned features until November or December. You can read more at read more on mediawiki.org. /Johan (WMF) (overleg) 14 sep 2017 02:16 (CEST)[reageer]

Yet again, my apologies for writing in English (I know you understand it, but anyway). Please feel free to translate this to Dutch.
Unfortunately, we’ve discovered we were wrong. In a couple of weeks – October 1 – the function to create PDFs from articles you have added to a book will stop working temporarily. We’ll work on getting it back up again. We aim to have it up within the next few months, but honestly, this has been forced upon us and it could take longer. We apologise.
Creating PDFs from single articles will work as previously stated.
You can follow the work in Phabricator: phab:T150871 and phab:T175853. /Johan (WMF) (overleg) 19 sep 2017 23:53 (CEST)[reageer]

Nieuwste?

Kopje 'contact' in artikel

Livenws (overleg) 21 sep 2017 17:10 (CEST)[reageer]

Is dit een antwoord? --FredTC (overleg) 22 sep 2017 03:46 (CEST)[reageer]

Please help expand Wikivoyage:Mijlpalen with documentation of the site's main efforts/milestones over the years (especially if you are one of the most active editors)

We at the Hebrew Wikivoyage have recently created and expanded this page in which we have (1) documented, as best as we could, the most important milestones our community achieved over the years in the development of the site (2) added the current most important milestones we are trying to achieve in the development of the Hebrew Wikivoyage in the present.

I noticed that most of the Wikivoyage communities have not created this page and/or haven't written yet a more well documented page with the most important milestones achieved in the development of their own Wikivoyage edition over the years. Most likely, because usually only a handful of highly active editors are the ones whom usually lead the way trying to reach various BIG goals in the development of the site instead of just editing the content article by article, and in my opinion, these pages would probably be written in the best way possible if they were written by each Wikivoyage edition's most highly active editors.

Either way, if possible, please help expand this page on your Wikivoyage edition (especially if you are one of the most active editors in your Wikivoyage edition over the years) and help document, as best as we could, the most important milestones achieved in the development of your Wikivoyage edition over the years + add the current most important milestones your Wikivoyage community is trying to achieve in the present.

I am hoping that if each/most of the Wikivoyage editor communities do this we'll all have a much better understanding about where each community has chosen to focus all of their efforts throughout their site's existence (and perhaps, in this way, each Wikivoyage community might inspire the rest of the Wikivoyage editor communities to adopt new ideas for new important initiatives on our own edition of Wikivoyage which we haven't even considered so far).

What do you think ? ויקיג'אנקי (overleg) 4 dec 2017 22:06 (CET)[reageer]

Edit-a-thon "5 years Wikivoyage"

We propose an edit-a-thon dedicated to the 5th anniversary of the Wikivoyage launch at the WMF servers that took place on January 15, 2013. At Russian Wikivoyage it will be combined with the celebration of our 5000th article that we expect in early January. In a nutshell, we plan to request central banner on relevant language versions of Wikipedia, and offer small presents to everyone who makes useful edits to Wikivoyage articles during the period of January 16 - February 15, 2018.

We prepared several pages:

  • Landing page that explains the basics of adding new objects and editing the existing ones; how to use Listing Editor and what to write in the description field
  • Getting started, where we explain how to use Wikivoyage (dynamic maps, images, GPX files, offline usage) and what is special about our project; how we are different from other travel guides
  • Rules of the edit-a-thon. The participants will score 1 point for each object added to an article, provided that they add practical information and write a meaningful description based on their first-hand knowledge. Copying information from the web is strongly discouraged.
Every participant who scored more than 10 points, will receive postcards (this is equivalent to the prizes given for the Asian Month in Wikipedia). Those participants who will write at least 2 articles with the usable or guide status will receive printed travel guide for the region of their choice.

These are the rules at Russian Wikivoyage. You should feel free to modify them in your own way, but please, stick to several general guidelines:

  • Prepare the landing page that will include brief instructions on which articles to edit, how to edit them, as well as links to relevant policies and guidelines in your language
  • Provide the text of the central notice in your language
  • Name one person who will be responsible for the communication
  • If you plan to give presents, draft formal rules and find the presents. Our presents are partly funded by Wikimedia Russia and partly by ourselves. Talking to your regional chapter or even writing a rapid grant application may be a good idea. The prizes are not compulsory, but they are likely to increase the number of participants and motivate them to work harder.

Deadline: January 4, 2018. After this date I will initiate the Central Notice request on meta. Without the landing page and other relevant information, I won't be able to include your language into the request, and you won't have the central banner. Should you have question, please, ask them here or on my talk page. Happy New Year, and all the best in 2018!
